The origin and story of the mischievous Christmas elf
The mischievous Christmas elf originates in the USA, in the family of Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell. Every year, Carol will tell her daughter about the Christmas elf adventures. A tradition in the family going back for generations. This is how the book “The Elf on the Shelf” was born in 2005. It tells the story of how Father Christmas knows how good the children have been, thanks to the watchful eye of his Christmas elves.
The Christmas elves work year round with Father Christmas. On December 1st, they are sent to their host families.
Their mission? Monitor the children's behaviour before Christmas.
Every night, the mischievous elf flies back to the North Pole to report to Father Christmas. Your Christmas elf loves a good laugh! He often plays jokes on his family on his return from the North Pole before everyone wakes up. During the day the elf lays still but in the night he moves around the house, getting up to all sort of antics. Every morning, the children wake up happy and eager to discover the mischief your very own elf has been up to during the night.
Lots of fun but one strict rule to follow! So that your Christmas elf's 24 days stay goes smoothly, there is one rule that must respected.
Children must not touch the Christmas elf otherwise he will lose all his magic powers. If that happened by accident, sprinkle him with a tiny bit of ground cinnamon and sing him a Christmas song, elves loooove that!
Your elf does not speak but he is an extremely good listener. He will listen to everything children want to tell him. They should not hesitate to confide in him their feelings, hopes or dreams. He can pass them on to Father Christmas during his nightly trips to the North Pole.
Give him a name
Each adopting family must give the Christmas elf a name. Here are a few names, very popular amongst the mischievous elves: Snow Flake, Tickle Toe, Elfy, Sparkles, Twinkle, Jo King, Tinsel, Jolly Pant. You will also find more suggestions, in the personalisation section.
On December 24, the elf goes back to the North Pole. His stay with your family ends, time to say goodbye and see you next year!
A helping hand from the parents! As foster parents, you also have a role to play in creating this Christmas fairyland. Every night or early morning, before the children wake up, you set up your personalised Christmas elf jokes. Don't know where to start? No need to panic, our booklet explains it all/contains 24 ideas of antics.
Here a short recap: On December 1st, the elf arrives at your home together with the arrival letter included in the kit. Then follows 24 days of antics. To help you we have collated 24 antics easy to set up and even a little planner to help you getting them organised.
On December 24, it's time for your elf to say goodbye and head back to help Father Christmas. As for his arrival, you will find a leaving note and a suggestion for his departure set up in your booklet.
The aim of this booklet is to help you with ideas and set up during the run up to Christmas and make is as easy and fun as possible.
Be ready for December mornings full of excitement and laughter.
What age is adapted for the mischievous Christmas elf? The tradition of the mischievous elf is for all ages. But we recommend to start with children age 3 and more, who will be more likely to understand the story of the elves and the daily antics he is up to.
And "voila", all there is left to do is personalise your mischievous elf to receive it before December 1st.
May the Christmas magic begin!
Instructions for use
Do not leave the elf with children 3 and under unsupervised.
Be ready! For a lot of fun and mischief during the month of December.
